General information
Allergy is a medical specialty that deals with the study, diagnosis and treatment of allergic reactions and related diseases.
It plays a key role in identifying the causes of allergies, understanding their manifestations and tracking the course of these conditions.
Unlike many other medical specialties that focus on a specific organ system, allergology is entirely patient-centered as a whole.
This specialty encompasses several large groups of pathological processes, including allergic, autoimmune, and immunodeficiency diseases.
Allergic reactions can range from mild, such as hay fever, to severe, such as anaphylactic shock, requiring immediate medical intervention.
Autoimmune diseases, in which the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues, also fall under the purview of the allergist.
In addition, immunodeficiency conditions, in which the immune system is not functioning properly, are another area in which the allergist can offer expert help.
An allergist is the specialist who helps patients manage and control their allergies.
He uses a wide range of diagnostic methods and treatment approaches to provide the best possible treatment.
His job involves identifying allergens that trigger reactions and developing strategies to avoid these allergens.
Diseases
- Asthma
- Drug allergy
- Allergic rhinitis
- Food allergy
- Diseases of the immune system, etc.
Clinical examination with an Allergist
During the clinical examination, the allergist collects a detailed history of the patient to make a preliminary diagnosis.
This process includes an in-depth discussion of symptoms, their nature, duration and frequency, as well as information about family history of allergies or other related diseases.
Additional tests are often needed to more fully clarify the health condition.
These tests may include laboratory immunological tests, which analyze immune system responses, and skin allergy tests, which determine sensitivity to various allergens.
Once the test results are ready, the allergist interprets them in order to prescribe the most appropriate and up-to-date treatment.
This involves developing an individual treatment plan, which may include drug therapy, recommendations to avoid specific allergens, and other treatment approaches.
In addition, the allergist schedules follow-up consultative examinations to monitor the patient’s condition and adjust treatment as necessary.
Pre-operative counselling, which is essential for patients undergoing surgical interventions, is also carried out in the Allergy Department.
This includes testing tolerance to different types of anaesthetics to prevent possible allergic reactions during surgery.
The allergist collaborates with anesthesiologists and surgical teams to ensure patient safety and well-being before, during and after surgical intervention.
